John is originally from Sudan and also spent some time in Uganda before he fled to Australia with his mother and large family. His father remains in Sudan.
In Africa, John struggled to get food and a basic education. He explains that school fees in Sudan are extremely high. His family couldn't afford them, so he stayed at home.
Settling in Australia, John knew he was struggling with his homework, so he approached a woman at a local recreation centre for help. She put him in touch with The Helping Hand Project and his "friend" Tony. John is full of praise for his mentor. "Tony is a good person. I can trust him."
John is now studying sports and recreation, as part of the Melbourne Heart Sports Development Programme (SEDA). He is aiming for a career as a professional footballer, but has also discovered a love of writing and is considering penning a book about his life experiences.
Either way, John sees a bright future for himself. "I will make it here."
