It's rare for a teenage boy to declare that he loves homework.
Garang's love of learning is such that he's planning to use money earned at his part time job on weekend tutoring sessions.
Garang is from Sudan, where educational opportunities are severely limited. Since settling in Australia and meeting his mentor, Andrew, his marks have improved, as has his confidence.
Andrew helps Garang with his homework, has helped him find a part time job at a fast food restaurant and provides him with general guidance.
As well as being incredibly scholastic, Garang is involved in a wide variety of sporting activities. He is an avid reader, taking part in the Premier's Reading Challenge and he has been awarded a principal's award for academic achievement.
When asked what his favourite subject is, Garang thinks for a moment before settling on mathematics. He is now considering studying towards a business degree, a goal made all the more realistic with Andrew's support.
"In war torn Sudan, Garang struggled to get a basic education. Since settling in Australia and meeting his mentor, Andrew, he has become an award winning student."
